You can download an application and submit it to us by mail, fax, or by scanning and e-mailing it to us to start the registration process at any time.
I'm already tutoring independently. Why should I go through a "middle man" like Advancement Learning?
The answer to this question comes in three parts:
1) As a tutor with Advancement Learning, you would be registered as an Independent Contractor rather than hired as an employee. This designation allows you to continue doing your own independent tutoring work. Any work that you receive from Advancement Learning would be in addition to the work you can acquire on your own. And as your own private client base increases, you will have the freedom to decline any further offers of work from Advancement Learning (or to terminate your contract entirely).
2) Advancement Learning actively invests in the marketing infrastructure needed to reach a wider market of potential clients and to generate greater volume of service than individual tutors can achieve on their own. Joining our network of tutors puts that infrastructure to work for you.
3) If you are not yet operating at the capacity you desire, referral work from Advancement Learning can help you fill up any empty slots in your schedule and maximize your income. If you're already operating at full capacity with your own private client base, then you would gain nothing by joining our network and you should read no further. If you decide to join our network and you one day reach full capacity with your own private client base, you can simply choose to decline any further work from Advancement Learning. And you retain the right to terminate your contract at any time.
In short, we've structured our network and our policies in this way specifically so that you as a tutor will have nothing to lose and something to gain by joining the Advancement Learning network.
What does it mean to be an "Independent Contractor" rather than an employee?
As mentioned above, your designation as an "Independent Contractor" to Advancement Learning allows you to continue performing your own private tutoring work.
Additionally, Independent Contractors have complete freedom in the management of their own time and choice of work location in the course of their service to the company. Independent Contractors are hired to deliver a result without being given specific directions from the company on how to perform their services. Independent Contractors are responsible for their own training and the procurement of their own supplies.
Finally, as an Independent Contractor, you will be responsible for reporting your own income and paying any federal and state taxes owed on that income. The company does not withhold any portion of your pay for tax purposes as it would for an employee. If Advancement Learning pays you $600 or more for your services in a given year, you will receive a Form 1099, indicating the total amount you were paid for your services. You would then report this amount on your tax return and pay any taxes owed on that income.

What flexibility will I have as a tutor with Advancement Learning?
The goal of Advancement Learning is to fully meet the needs of both our clients and our tutors by providing the greatest degree of flexibility. We believe that you shouldn't have to restructure your life to fit into Advancement Learning. We have structured our business to fit into your life, so that our business relationship is a win-win -- for our clients, for you, and for Advancement Learning.
On this basis, Advancement Learning provides you flexibility in the following ways:
1) You are free to pursue your own independent tutoring work with your own private client base even while under contract with Advancement Learning.
2) You coordinate directly with the client to schedule the specific days and times for the tutoring sessions that work best for both you and the client. This allows you to fit tutoring into your life around your full-time job, family obligations, and other commitments on your personal time.
3) You accept or decline client referrals on a case-by-case basis. This allows you to take on only as much additional work as you can fit into your available time.
4) In your application and in your contract, you get to specify where you are willing to provide your tutoring services. You may opt to provide tutoring at your home only, at the clients' homes only, or both. Once you make your choice, Advancement Learning will honor your wishes and only refer clients to you if their choice of location matches your own.
5) You have the freedom to employ any instructional strategies that you deem to be effective. Advancement Learning will never direct your methods of instruction.
6) You retain the right to terminate your contract with Advancement Learning at any time by providing 30-days notice.
What flexibility won't I have as a tutor with Advancement Learning?
1) During the term of your contract with Advancement Learning, you cannot simultaneously be contracted to provide tutoring services for another tutoring company.
The following restrictions only apply to clients that Advancement Learning refers to you. (These do not apply to clients who come directly to you.)
2) You cannot set your own prices. The hourly rate charged to the client is based on the rate schedule posted on this website and the specific service options that the client selects.
3) You cannot change or renegotiate the terms of service that the client selected at the time they purchased their service. The terms of service will be presented to you at the time the client referral is offered to you. You can at that time choose to accept or decline that referral.
4) During the term of your contract with Advancement Learning and for a period of 1 year thereafter, you cannot make your own private offers of service to the clients who Advancement Learning refers to you. These clients must go through Advancement Learning any time they wish to purchase additional service.
How much will I be paid?
You will be paid 65% of the fee charged to the client(s) you provide tutoring services to for all sessions after the client(s) first hour of service with Advancement Learning.
A client's first hour of service* is offered to them free of charge to allow them the opportunity to meet you face-to-face and evaluate your tutoring methods. Advancement Learning will pay you a flat rate of $25 for a client's first hour of service. This payment will be made to you when that client purchases follow-on service through Advancement Learning.
* The client's first hour of service includes up to 30 minutes of consultation time with you to discuss the student's needs and learn about your background and your instructional methods. The consultation is followed by 30 minutes of tutoring with the student to determine student-teacher compatibility.
How often will I be paid?
You will be paid semi-monthly for all services (after a client's first hour of service) that you provide within that pay period.
The flat rate payment of $25 for a client's first hour of service will be paid to you in the semi-monthly pay period in which that client first purchases follow-on service through Advancement Learning.
